bournemouth race 21st sept 2013

after launch i noticed the tiedown for the jib to the forestaywas off so we beached the boat the mist had cleared to a reasonable distance.
we worked out that port start was best but got back to the line later and ended up starting in the middle, we ducked the fleeat and got clear wind and ended up at the mark in first place thanks to a last minute windshift.
after that it was slow progress out of the bay and surfing some big waves as we neared old harry, at one stage we almost wiped out with a big gust.
going over old harry the waves were big and we were going very slow
in the lead of the cats were steve, mike, richard then mark d  greg gybed of and disappeared and mark g was behind as was pete.

we rounded bournmouth mark after almost  95 mins doing about 5-6 knts the whole way. upwind we headed out to sea and then tacking for the port 2 bouy to head home. greg caught us up at this mark and then going over old harry we pulled away slightly, we headed back at to sea and greg went in.
when we were almost in durlston we headed straight for the finish we could se 2 boats ahead rich and mark d. we taked once more on top of greg who had caughtt us again and we went into irons on the old pier. we lost a min 55 doing the 360
we got overtook my mark g as well
5 cats finished within 5 mins, we were 1m55 behind greg and mark and 5 behind rich. time 3hr 3m    21.5 miles sailed

21st september

well no sailing due to work.
today was the bournemouth race. it was doubtfull if it would be held due to light winds. in the morning gary and i took out the boats and had a  good blast around.
i sailed with liz and gary had her daughter as crew. liz did some filming while we were out. some good reaches and beats and the occasional good gust that alsmost caught us out. 8 miles+ 1hr 40 sailing.

6th july 3 sails

after a month off due to work, forcast was not good but sunny.
launched with gary via paddle and did a drift for over an hour admiring the clear blue sea. paddled back in to find wind get up just as we got ashore.
about an hour later went out with john russ and had a very good sail
9 nm in an hour and a bit compared to 2 nm from the morning.
with a quick visit to the beach to help lorna rig we set off again and headed out to pevril ledge bouy and had a smooth rounding. the 2nd time we headed out to watch a shrimper racce from parkstone yc. the ledge wasa bi choppier and we soon had to alter course to avoid the bows going under in the swell.
again out for over an hour or more and another 6nm.
it was very hot and clear blue sky.
enoyed it very much. left the club at 6pm in the evening so a long day
overall.  pics are am sail, afternoon 1 sail ,  afternoon 2 sail .

Saturday 1 June 2013

1st june solo sail

after a month of no sailing  due to work change and on nights i was itching to get out. however it was blowing 20knts + on arrival.
gary was avaialable but in the end didnt make it and he would have been valuable ballast.
i launched eventually at 1pm and broke the trolley in the process, sailing main only i sailed with a bit of caution as the waves were still breaking.
it was ok and eventually i did push it a bit more, the first downwind section i thought i was going to break every batten on the boat  lol.
after a few up and down and reaches  and 45 mins later i headed in to find out keith h didnt mend the trolley as i thought he may have , borrowing a set from someone i eventually got the boat into the berth and take the old ones home for repair. sunday no wind forecast so didnt stay down overnight.
pleased i went out either way.

lauren pratice 27th april 2013

wind was forecast f4 to f5
waves were crashing in on the beach as we launched.
we did some good upwind and reaching work and downwind as well. at one time we got under the cliffs and found a hole in the wind . when we got going the gusts kept us on our toes, having to head up to avoid going over. lauren eventually went out on the wire after hiking out for ages. when it was time to come ashore we had to wait for other boats. we stood off the beach by circling around and drifting eventually i drove the boat up the beach as i didnt think spinning the boat around head to wind was possible in the conditions. everything was ok after and we breathed a sigh of relief.
lauren did well and is doing a lot better.
time on water 1h20. distance 8.45. miles top speed 15.9 knts

spring series 5 21st april 2013

martin had agreed to crew and i was worried about how he would find my sailing, we got on ok and he gave good tips and advice, we went around the course to start with and then made our way for the start, got burried a little but this forced us to tack away and we ended up going staright to the mark and in 1st plce, he commented  have you ever been in the lead i replied yeah just once and that was a whole lap. but didnt know what to do.
we were hounded by nick troy who evetually got past us on the dow wind leg lap 3 and the pete overtook and quickly broke his tiller bar, so we regained 2nd only to lose it to richard who came steam rollering by both of us to take the lead.
we survived lap 4 to finnish ahead of greg and also mark who had gary as crew.
very pleased with sailing, martin helped alot with tactics and kept me pointing the right way when i wandered of course.
crew can make a difference  and martin proved it.
overall 3rd on the water 4th overall apart from mike cemm ood so 5th on paper

pleasure sail 20th april

new crew gary burlsden turned up and had never been on a dart 18
wind was light and sunny. we headed off toward old harry and made good progress, we neared the race and then decided to head back in swanage bay, it didnt take us long and the wind got lighter and then picked up as gary took the helpm for some lessons. we reached up and down a few times and explored a bit of the coast and then headed in.
Sailing time 1h 55 wind 8 knts max 13knts and sse to se and very warm.
after a few beers i met with richard hart for a meal and then got invited to the new members party. after a full meal and much beer i couldnt eat much of the nice spread they had put on. during the evening martin hamlyn agreed to crew for sunday so some good came of the evening.

Sunday 7 April 2013

spring series 2 april 7th

wind was forcast 15knts and building easterly. after rigging the boat and also sorting the new boat berth, i found a small hole in the foot of the mast about level with the sail slot, i dont think its structral but wa advised to fill it to stop water getting in and causing more corrosion.
the wind was very cold and sea was wavy. i felt fairly relaxed which was unusual
made a reasonable start but couldnt get the boat going fast, on port tack seemed better, maybe it was the waves stopping us.
off 1 to 2 was fun and the waves were slapping the side of the boat and getting us soaked, and it was freezing cold as well.
first down wind was not good so the next lap we went right and then headed for the mark. 3 to 4 was fast and had no problems at all. 4 to the committee boat was into the wind and wave and found it hard again to make the boat move.
Lauren went out on the wire the first beat and that was it, DIDNT LIKE IT !!
she didnt really need too, to be honest the boat didnt heal at all.
overall for the first race we did ok as a team, did nothing wrong at all, all good tacks and gybes, just needed to speed up.
finished 5th from a strong 5 man field.
