winter fun series 11.11.12

the weather was really sunny but cold, we launched at 10am as Lauren had to be away for 1145 or so.
we worked on getting the boat going and trapezing, the wind was nice further out in the bay. had some good blasts and Lauren was happier with going out on the wire, this was our first sail for 6 weeks, ropes getting tangled and jib trimming was the order of the day, around 11am we headed over to do the mini races around a few marker bouys in the harbour area, the first start was crazy more mike a match race start, we were gybing and tacking as the lasers were everywhere. finally after a bad start but close to the line we were off and we caught up to the front almost, the wind was very light. a final blast into the bay and we headed back in. 1h 45 mins on the water, not bad for the first winter sail

summary

well this season was a mixed bag really, lack of crew change of crew both novice to cat racing.
bad weather good weather, hopefully the fun series for winter will be a bit more consistant with Lauren now crewing, a little bit more training and 2013 could be a good year for once.
consistant crew is key. overall happy with what i have done but need the boat tweak toward the end of the season to do well again. the bournmouth race was my best effort by far teaming up with John Russ yet again. my bad mark rounding cost us many spots so with a good clean race who knows what could have been. as for series events must make more effort to attend and not watch the weather all the time when i could just turn up launch and maybe then retire if i dont like the wind.

looking forward to 2013

autumn 5 sunday 30th september

we launched knowing it was going to be a blow, we pratised our gybes and tacks and felt it was going to be a struggle, Lauren went out on the wire and struggled to keep her footing as the waves hit. after a few more reaches she decided it was too much for her and we just reached and hiked out instead.
it was all good pratice and good for building confidence, we had moved closer to shore where the sea was calmer. if we had of raced it would have been pure survival.
there is always next week !! sailing time 30-40 mins

Bournmouth race 22nd September 2012

after the prev few sails of not doing very well i decided to do changes to the boat the first being slacken off the battens then the mast forestay and see how it goes. when i arrived at swanage bright and early i was greeted with a nice fresh easterly. i got the boat ready and altered the battens to loose.
tightened the toestraps. i wasn't looking forward to this race at all as the wind was supposed to be 14 knts + on an easterly, out of the bay i was expecting some chop.
John Russ agreed to crew for his annual sail to Bournemouth, we launched with about 15 mins to go and had everything on board, radio , gps and phone just incase.
a quick test on the wire and john was happy. we got to the line no propbelm but were burried with lots of other boats. mark Dooley and mike cemm made good starts and we were just behind them.
we had to keep tacking out on port to clear the cliffs of ballard and better wind was found on this tack, we found ourselves eventually toward old harry in 5th spot and after rounding Poole bar buoy we were in 4th spot overhauled mike cemm and also pulled away from richard. at one time we were 150 yds or so behind perham and MD the canoe was going realy well. with occasionally bursts of speed we found ourselves close to Bournemouth and spotted our yellow bouy, we round 3rd cat 4th overall and nothing in sight behind us. however i round the boat to fast and we didn't make the tack drifted and hit the mark, i sailed off and tried to do a 360 but this failed and then said ok lets round the mark then do the 360 later. we did that and got overtaken by Steve little john. we soon passed him again and it wasn't until before the bar buoy he overtook us. Richard was fast catching and stray cat
over old harry the race was building and we hit a few lumps good and proper, it was all good fun as we were motivated that we were doing well. we came out the other side ok only to find Richard snapping at our stern, we pulled away and by the time we got into the bay he was back and about to overtake, the wind picked up and we started burying the bow in the gusts and fighting every ounce of speed out of the boat  we didn't want to be overtaken !! we headed straight for the old pier where the line was, we didn't know what to look for and Richard slid behind us at great speed , had we finished ??, we got in and i asked john to go find out, we had finished correctly however Richard had just pipped us.
all in all the best race i had done on a dart 18 i beat Greg as well who has been sailing far better than me all year. this race had been dragged out of the bag somehow and if it wasn't for the mistake we would have been 3rd car home and not 5th
well done john for your tactics once again. i did try to film it but the head cam kept switching off, hopefully the track will come out when the gps decides it wants too !!
finish time 2h 3m , faster  two prev trips on mutley192, fastest trip on a dart18 2nd fastest trip overall. fastest trip 1h48m on mutley192

Autumn 3 16th September 2012

Wind was predicted to be 12-15knts, when i arrived it was fairly calm. after not sailing for 4 weeks i was eager to get out and have a blast. Lauren hadnt trapezed before so i had to show her how to do that on land first, then we launched at about 1020am, we reached up and down and Lauren went out on the wire no problem at all, the wind was steady and we made good progress.
at 10.50  no safety boats were out and the race had been delayed for some reason, eventually the postponement came down and we were under way, the wind had picked up and the sea had  got choppier. we found mike cemm at the pin and and we made a dash to join him, it was a bit rushed for me, at 15 secs i tacked an fluffed it, so we had a late start, the wind didnt produce that much speed and that was the story of the day really, couldn't get the boat going.
Lauren did fantastic on the wire, a few mistakes on the jib down wind but nothing that would cause great delay. lack of pratice i think was key. the boat may have to be tweaked a little to get some speed. but overall as a new team i can t complain at all. Lauren is keen and that's all what matters.
after we finished the race she went on the wire all the way back to the old pier, i did joke about going up the beach as well but she said not a good idea  lol
i did try to film it on the helmet cam but it kept turning itself off, Lauren will be glad !!

Summer series 8 12th August 2012

summer 8, after a 20knt easterly the day before i was expecting rolling seas, but it wasn't to be
after launching fairly early we did a few pratice gybes and tacks so that Lauren could get up to speed in calmer conditions.
we thought we timed the start well but the line was not set particularly well and we ended up beating down toward the pin end ?? mike cemm had done a port flyer and we wondered why ??
we started over the line eventually 1m 20ish well behind the others, it was a case of catch up to Pete and Patrick D15
we did make some progress until i started having rope problems again. on the run Lauren took the helm while i sorted it out. a bad tack on my part on one lap put us further behind as i decided to tack sooner rather than later going across the line. it meant in the end i did more tacks. on the next lap we did catch up slightly and finished about 1m 40 down on Pete, the committee boat didn't spot us going so slow and missed giving us a hoot, i sussed it out and took my time straight away and Desney said  you are down as dnf. my reply was no the committee boats all had there heads down and didn't finish me, here's my time !!

overall very pleased with both our progress as a team and no doubt will improve as time goes on, Lauren seemed to enjoy it better today as it didn't involve the survival words haha. on the way back in i mentioned about ladies race and helming or crews race, her reply was "too soon and did i value my boat " lol
on the way back in i did let her take the tiller to start the ball rolling, next step will be trapezing , but wasn't needed today
total distance sailed 16.5 miles

Sunday 29 July 2012

July 28th & 29th July Summer series 7

Saturday was duty day for the commodores cup
in the afternoon i sailed on Stray cat with John Russ on a stryder cat cruiser.
In total i did not get off the water until 1730 in the evening there was fireworks as the start of carnival week

Sunday i had a new crew Lauren who had only just completed her adult training course and had never been on a cat before. after everyone was taking the mickey out of us on the beach while i was telling her about the basics of the boat.
the wind was picking up all the time and the waves were choppy, a good force four to five. I messed the start up by being to far away from the start !!. we went across the line a few minutes late, starboard tack was very heavy due to the waves and i didn't make much progress at all, after rounding Mark one the reach was no better, but downwind to 3  was better. (a triangle course)
Each tack for the committee boat was messed up and i had to reverse the rudders every time. I really struggle in waves and wind to do this, however toward the end of the race we were sailing much better, a good reach from 1 to 2 was fantastic and Lauren commented on it after.
considering the conditions and with a novice crew we did really well. Lauren did exceptionally well for a first time on a DART 18 , with more training for the helm im sure Lauren will do very well in crewing on a dart.
as far as i could tell she didnt make any mistakes at all which is very good indeed. trapezing will be the next bit to master and then real progress can be made.

summer 6

after not sailing on the Saturday with Richard on freespirit i decided to launch early and go for a long sail before the race. launched at 0915, wind was light easterly. made my way over to the octopus as some kayaks were over on the beach, the sea was very clear as i got nearer to the beach. after briefly beaching the boat for what was going to be a quick swim i thought better of it as the boat was being washed onto the hard shingle. i made my way around the bay to ocean bay and then the mowlem and then over to the committee boat to see what was going on. by 1045 a lot of the boats were out and the wind was picking up.
my start was poor as i forgot where the pin end was so it was follow the fleet past the committee boat .
the tack to go for the line at the end of lap one dropped me way back as i had no jib.
however i did seem to make progress as the race went on, lapping in about 14 mins, the others didn't seem too far ahead.
after about 4 laps and dicing with the lead lasers i eventually finished almost catching Clive Stacey
race time 1h05m05s the beat back was good and caught up many boats as the wind filled in.
a good sail overall with no crew and no jib,  very hot and sunny for once  so cant complain !

Sunday 1 July 2012

wind was very breezy. 9 years ago on this same weekend the wind was fresh as well but a simple capsize went wrong and i ended being rescued by the RNLI. ths even still sticks in my mind and today was spooking me out, however a few words of wisdom from a few fellow club mates soon put me right.
so we launched and felt our way around  taking it very gingerly, spilling lots of wind. a few cats went over including Pete. after strugling to tack the boat around to tack the start we eventually set off a few mins late, however when we were about to tack for the 1st mark we noticed every one was heading in, race abandoned, we did not know why.
we got back to the club in one piece only to hear that the race officer abandoned for people going out when they really shouldnt have (novices) and with a few boats over as well the officer was concerned as the weather wasnt letting up
i was glad in a way but felt it was a long drive down just for about 25 mins total sailing.

Poole bar bouy race day 23rd june 2012

the forecast wasn't very good, however i went down anyway and arranged to do some early morning sailing with Garry to get some more time on the water. we were the first to launch and all we did was reach across the bay at great speed with Garry on the wire. it was good fun, there were some huge gusts and waves in the bay, i had decided after a few down wind attempts that the Poole bar race was a definite no go for me, Garry tried to convince me but i stuck to my guns, it would have been more survival than racing.
after an hour we finally went in to warm up and have food. Garry admitted maybe the race was optimistic for us. we planned to go back out after lunch just in case the  F5-f6 had dropped, the next session was to me rougher and we only stayed out 30 mins, a few boats ventured out for the race , however a few also came back, including Pete and crew Greg after they spectacularly capsized and Pete got hit in the face by Greg lol
Bill didn't finish or Mike Greanleaves , Phil Palmer and of course Pete, i think one other was towed in as well. the race was over in 48 mins for the Littlejohns D18.

well the wind was almost nothing but occasional puffs. Alan said it was most likely because we were sheltered , the race was delayed until 1130, we launched at our normal time and apart from the paddle out to the old pier we had a great blast. Gary took some pics with his iphone when we were well out to sea, we practised the course  however when we got to each mark they were just moving it  lol. after 2 laps we headed to the committee boat and prepared for the start, i messed the watch timing up slightly and this did mar our start.
Cemm Groome and Miller was the order ahead and Pete and patrick D15 behind, patrick was the fly in the ointment and hampered us in an effort to escape. we had moments of glory leaving him in our wake until the 4th lap when everything seemed to alter in his and Pete's favor. we fell behind and Pete overtook, why we don't know, i think the wind had altered and we just didn't notice in time.
never mind, Gary was disappointed and so was i that Pete had beat us. never mind there is always next week !!

Sunday 20 May 2012

pratice sail 19th May 2012 / 20th May DNS race praticed

Gary and I changed the new main sheet rope and then headed out for a trapeze session. downwind the wind was good and we said jokingly we would go to old harry, there was some wave but not that we noticed, however when we were well out of the bay i looked back and seen the waves and thought better of it to carry on,
we got into the bay again ok, and then we practised Gary on the trapeze, he did very well and really enjoyed it, the wind picked up a fraction and after about 1 1\2 hours we headed back in because we were on safety duty for the after noon's Durlston race.

on Sunday the wind was stronger and NE, we headed out and found it choppy.
the race was delayed for a few boats over, one of them a moth which went over pevrill and was rescued by the RNLI. we stayed out for a about 45 mins and then came back in, the race didnt get under way until 1145

we both agreed it was out of our comfort zone and we wanted back in. but we did have a good pratice while we were out there.

Sunday 6 May 2012

1974 cup race.

finally after 3 weeks of being unwell, the weather calmed down a bit and we were faced with an easterly about 12knts++   Gary was ready for the off but i was apprehensive with the waves on the beach, after watching Phil and roger come to grief on the pier i thought our launch had better be good.
we were last cat away and thank goodness we were ok, apart from Gary not getting on the boat  lol, i managed to haul him aboard and everything else went ok.
we got to the start and a few reaches later we were off, a little behind the line but not too bad.
cemm, Greg and Mark dooley were all ahead with phil trying to snap at our heals as well. Pete was somewhere in the mix  but eventually we were 4th in line. thats how it stayed. we almost got Mark D but not quite. the race finished after 40 mins for us ??
pleased overall how we both did and how we came into land as well.
easterlies are not my favourites but today i think it was ok

Sunday 15 April 2012

solo sail 14th april

aftera long wait for the easterly to drop i launched solo and headed for the bay.
the waves were rolling in, the boat was zipping along nice untill i tried to tack. the waves stopped me from going around, i finally got underway again and gybed instead, not feeling to easy about it i reached back to the sheleter of the pier area and tacked ok, then decided to go further inshore instead on a few reaches.
the weather was increasing and a storm looked as theough it was going to hit so i sailed back in.
the boat was awkward to get out on my own as i had to scamble for the trolley leaving the boat bouncing on the beach. finally pete arrived and helped me drag it up the beach.
my session with tony was cancelled.

series race 3 was also put on for me as the wind was already 20knts north east when i got to the club
i decided against it and headed home.

Sunday 8 April 2012

spring series 2

Gary had the chance to crew in his first race with me, a bit of trapeze tuition first from Mike  on land and then we launched. wind was better than saturday and from the west.
we took the chance to do many tacks and gybes before the start to get gary used to doing them.
then we did the most perfect start ever, we were right on the line when the flag dropped.
at mark 1 we rounded after straycat but not totally last. the down wind legs were good and we tried to do something different to the rest by going out to peverill direction.  we all rounded 4 really close and then we lost some ground, however on the next beat we overhauled Pete then the next beat we did something different again and went well right, this worked because we overtook 3 cats and almost overtook straycat who had an amazing lift with the wind that helped us.
we only messed up one tack which was not bad really , the only other problem was my mainsheeet came undone from the block down wind from 3-4  needs a new one anyway, lost a bit of ground, however the race was over then luckily.  Gary was really pleased with the sailing and so was i.
hopefully Gary and Tony will make an interesting season on the crewing front.

cat training 7th APRIL

mike cemm hosted a cat training session which was for beginners to intermediates. a few new things were picked up on about setting jib tension which i never fully understood until then.
on the water we did tacking and gybing and swapped crews. wind was ligh and not very good, however in the afternoon myself and petes crew were the only ones to stay, so mike jumped on my boat and we had on to one sessions and then petes crew came to my boat, this i found really good and found alot of benifit from
especially helm position during tacks and gybes  not going back to soon.

Sunday 1 April 2012

spring series race 1

after a very cold night i was greeted by a north easterly and breaking waves in the bay.
a bit apprehensive i rigged the boat and then alan gould turned up  to crew.
it was a windward leward course which made a change to be honest.
we outwitted pete and then found ourself with mark and desney. after two laps of following alan suggested going further on the beat and made the mark easy and ahead of mark and desney. however next lap i messed up by not ducking the stern of a wayfarer and went into irons when they called starboard.
i lost 2 places to mark and desney and phil p , however i did regain that spot the next lap with a better  upwind leg.
after the race it was some helming tuition for alan, he found it all strange at first but im sure he will get it sorted.
pleased with today apart from the mistake.

The opener 2012

Tim Saunders was my crew for today and said that he had done some sailing in greee on big boats and on cats  but knew what to do.  he was very friendly and we got on really well a perfect sauturday siling crew
we messed the start up because i didnt have my race watch    , ton y set his but by the time we realised we were late going across the line. we followed mike cemms tracks but found it hard going and rounded the mark in last place, the only way was up and we struggled to catch a few toppers and lasers.
tony came up with some good ideas , pleased we were just on the water really so  didnt care that we were last overall, all the cats were last in the field greg was 1m 55 ahead on me on the water. mike was helming.

24th march 2012 First sail

it was forcast a good weekend and plenty of sun, so combined with beach clean boat move day i went for a sail
forcast was 7-12knts eastely which never arrived.
alan gould was keen to go out as well, we both waited for the mist to clear and the wind to fill in.
we noticed the wind indicator was moving but the sea state showed otherwise, eventually we took the gamble and launched, alan jumped on board MBM and i had only put the main up. so it was going to be fun.
after some backwards sailing along the beach we eventually paddled our way to some wind. after clearing the pier the wind was good.
we reached up and down 4 or 5 times and then headed back in, when we came to land the wind filled in briefly, typical my luck. later i preped the boat berth for the tracks to go down and next day the boat box was moved to under the stern of the boat.
ready for next week but alas still no crew !! yet

Sunday 26 February 2012

new season 2012

an update to the forth coming season, i cant wait for it to begin however still no sign of a crew from the club.
the good news is my new job allows me to race every weekend were possible.
this has never been possible so far due to my last job.
MBM needs to be used well this season and i am looking forward to it. its no good doing some races and then miss a few due to work, whet you raced for is all lost  due to last place pts being added to the season .
one thing i have to work on is my confidence level in windier weather and not deciding no im not going to travel beacause of it, however being blais about the weather and racing in stuff you cant cope with is not good either. ie the worlds and the carnage that followed from that on day one.
hopefully a new crew can motivate me to do well in 2012
watch this space

Sunday 5 February 2012

28th Jan 2012

A visit to swanage to do Power boat 2 practical was a good time to check on MBM. during early november richard put the cover down on the boat so the wind wouldnt tear the cover apart, however all the rain and sand made the cover worse then expected, so it was re hoisted and cleaned off as best i could. need some soapy stuff to get it cleaner.
powerboat 2 was good fun, hosted by Mike Chemm and Phil Palmer, weather was very cold.
