Big Move Day

today was the big move to get MBM 7424 to Weston SC. for racing in 2015.
it was a icy day and the van was frozen  making my get away late.
arrived Swanage 0745. all the kit was packed onto the boat and wheeled on flatter tyres to be loaded onto the trailer. everything went well and the mast support was spot on for height. it did wobble a bit from side to side.
we finally made tracks around 10.30 heading for Wareham and Bournemouth on the main route out
the lighting board once again started playing up. Peter  followed in his car
we arrived at Weston 1210, the sun was shinning and was a nice day.
it was faster unloading than loading. the boat was rigged and off the trailer by 1250.
time we sorted  a few things we were all done by 14.00. for the time being im not using the stands as i will keep the laser at home. i now need to make a new boat box as the old on would not fit in the van.
the trip home did take a while as traffic qued on aprouch to Salisbury. eventualy getting home 1635.

Richard getting the righting line ready after capsize

had a fun day sailing today at Swanage. Richard lost his prized orange hat. we went back for it but it had sunk !!
then when we were closer to shore we spotted a hat floating in the sea, so we went around and with the gusts we went in irons, as the boat went back on the old tack Richard was on the wrong and we promptly capsized .
as no safety cover was around we managed to get the boat upright again with no problem, I had not righted a dart for over 3.5 years.
the cost was a little more than Richards hat. i lost my water bottle my paddle and shredded my cable on my head cam getting back on the boat.
all in all we did laugh about it, we circled again to see if the paddle had floated but alas not.
Our trip was earlier curtailed with the trampoline tension going completely due to broken clips on the rear beam ,so we abandoned going to Poole bar bouy all in all a eventful sail, but we did have fish cake and chips for lunch.

AFTER lunch we repaired the tramp clips and re tensioned it
so a worth while trip in the end
total time sailing 2h 15  max wind recorded 18knts on pier so more at sea

the first time MBM has been in this position ever for us

POOLE BAR BOUY 20TH SEPT 2014

the trip to swanage was very misty and took awile, Swanage bay was surrounded in mist as well and didnt look as though it would lift.
we set sail early as the wind was due to die around 11 or so. i jokingly said poole bar bouy to richard and he laughed. there was good wind so we headed that way calling in on a fleet from parksone yc going to weymouth in the mist.
richard said i never go on the tiller so i thought ok then you helm.
2hrs later we got to the starbourd bar bouy. it hink we were fighting the tide as well so overall not to bad.
going over old harry was slightly choppy.
rounding the mark i took over and headed out to sea on a broad reach. 45 mins later we were back in swanage, the wind had died as predicted and we only just got back at a snails pace.

13.5 miles 3hrs sailing

Richards back

well richard was back on MBM7424 so we decided to go to poole bar bouy

we went out to see on beat and just kept going at a steady rate we seen alan knowles and his friend john who said they were sailing in the bay, they were actually off old harry .  Alan has a mirror
we looked for the angle to tack back into the bar bouy and it was such an angle we decided that Bournmouth pier was more inviting, as the wind picked up with clean air we were zipping along.
the BOURNMOTH EYE was spotted and was dead on the port bow all the way. we looked back at the clouds and i thought  hmmm not looking forward to the trip home.
eventually after 1h 19m we got to Bournmouth pier and took some pics to prove it.
we turned for home assuming it was a reach broad reach and we made very good progress as a squall over studland came over, we were hitting some good waves but at a good speed, we made old harry within 15 mins, we were motoring. We kept on the same heading all the way untill we got to peverill and tacked back into the bay toward the mowlem, and then toward  the old pier,
We were back on shore withing 2h 15 from beach leaving to beach arriving, the last bit was the slowest so with this taken into account the trip must have been my fastest ever trip to Bournemouth and back EVER.

Swanage Regatta 2014

duty on the saturday so we could do the races on sunday
beachmaster morning and afternoon
and do the results with desney and christine. managed to do them after being shown for r3 and r4 on my own.
in the evening we had a bbq meal and did bar duty with greg and mike mcvey before the fireworks,

wind on the day was gusting 25knts w-sw

on the sunday 8 boats signed on.
i had clive stracey as my crew. he had not crewed with me since the hurricane .
unfortunatly he couldnt trapeze because of his back and hips but we managed.
we managed to sail backwards in the fleet to 8th spot and thats where we stayed , it was good fun sailing and challenging for us both. not sure we sailed the course as economic as we could have but only one messed up tack was all i did wrong. finnished 8th both times.  sailed in had lunch and decided to call it a day.
i felt more confident sailing in stronger winds and as i had hardly raced all season felt i had done ok.
also filmed on head cam so screenshots later.

race 2 gps track

Sunday 27 July 2014

27th july

well the sunday race was 2 back to back and a new crew for the day.
when i was sorting the ruddder i noticed it did not stay up, on closer inspection it had baiscally fallen to bits inside due to the inpact it took last ime i sailed, now i know what the bang was !!!

I BORROWED THE CLUB BOAT RUDDER WHICH WAS NOT VERY GOOD AT ALL
it made the steering heavy.
wind was fairly light with a an ebb tide which made the start for me very bad.
i made the pin end and then went to tack off only to stall and then drift backwards, in shor it took 15 mins to recross the line. we got going and did one lap. Mark was a bit heavy at 16 st. WE GOT STOPPED AFTER THE ONE LAP.
we milled around for about 30 mins waiting for everyone to finnish and then the course reset.
by the time the postponement came down we were way off the line, so i said by the time we hi the line we will be about 5 mins late again. so i headed in to shore.
all in all a nice weekend after sailing mutley 173741 for the first time.
time sailed about 1hr 20

============
£173 later and i havea new rudderstock complete. it was easy to see what piece went missing after i got hold of a new one complete. at least i havea spare now and just need to revamp it with a few rollers etc
windsport international supplied the goods really fast many thanks

Sunday 22 June 2014

early morning sail and Summer 4 2014

again  a early start for the drive down and out on the water just after 8am.
paddled out to the old pier and then it was nice beats and reaches up and down for 1h 30mins
the sun  was shinning and so relaxing.   1h30mins over 7miles sailing
returned to shore to see if I had a crew turn up but no one !!

wind was very light and the course very small I went on port to find when I tacked I ended up going back over the line. I was lapped before I made the first mark.
from then on the wind filled in a bit. PETE was solo as well, but had a better start, I had one incident with gary burglass after he tacked right on top of me, how I didn't hit him I don't know. I called penalty and he muttered words you didn't shout ???  I said I didn't have to  do your 360. he didn't do it
so I told the committee boat just incase and they said protest.  greg forwarded it on to gary who then finally did his turn.  then it was a case of watch my back as he was chasing hard.
he did eventually get me  but I was only on my mainsail and solo.
total time 1hr and a bit no idea miles as no gps.

Sunday 8 June 2014

summer 1 08 06 2014

after my 1h43m solo sail i came back to the beach to be greeted by gary parrot who was going to crew.
we launched into very light winds.
we messed the start up and started 2 mins late, my fault but  as it was my first race of the season .
we managed to over take a few boats that got tangles on the first mark. then it was hunting down gary and also mark.  we did manage gary but i too got caught on mark 1.
we did out 360 and carried on. the wind was very light and not exciting at all.
gary did well and we got on ok. helmed on the way back in
2h 09m  9.64 miles

total for the day
3h52     20.07miles

08th 06 2014 solo sail

today  was my first sail since my incident .
wind was light but began to build. launched at 0810 and sailed for 1h43m 10.43 miles
pratising sailing with no jib  and tacking  etc.  had a good sail. flew a hull a few times.
weather was really sunny, a pleasure  to be on the water.
